Opportunities for the Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement in the Solid Waste Sector in Peru

Article 6 of the Paris Agreement provides opportunities for countries to cooperate to enhance mitigation ambition and promote sustainable development. Assessing opportunities for the Implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement in the Solid Waste Sector in Peru, Climate Focus has developed an Article 6 conceptual pilot in which Peru and a partner country voluntarily engage in the transfer of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).

The conceptual pilot illustrates how Peru can potentially tap into additional finance streams while accommodating domestic priorities, emerging rules under Article 6 as well as other provisions of the Paris Rulebook. The pilot furthermore considers the provision of upfront support to Peru to further refine its MRV systems on the national and sectoral levels.

The study was commissioned by the Nordic Partnership Initiative (NPI) and developed in close cooperation with the Ministry of Environment of Peru (MINAM).
