ABOUT THE VCM ACCELERATOR PROGRAM

The VCM Accelerator in Pakistan is a two-part program:

Part I (Carbon Project Fundamentals Course) offers a one-day, in-person training on the end-to-end steps and processes to develop a VCM project. This course focuses on carbon project development within the VCM and will provide actionable information to help attendees navigate the process of implementing high-quality carbon projects. This will be held in Islamabad on Tuesday, March 19, 2024. This course is complimentary, but USAID will not cover costs associated with attending the course (e.g., travel costs, accommodation, etc.).

Part II (Technical Support Office Hours) offers select early-stage ventures (i.e., prospective carbon project developers) and existing project developers (i.e., those who are currently implementing their carbon projects) targeted advice on their carbon project development and credit monetization strategies. The program will commence in March 2024 and run through June 2024.

WHY DO CARBON MARKETS MATTER FOR PAKISTAN?

The Government of Pakistan requires extensive resources to implement its climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. According to Pakistan’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), the country requires approximately USD 100 billion for mitigation action in the energy sector alone by 2030, and USD 14 billion for adaptation measures by 2050.

Voluntary carbon markets are an important tool for mobilizing much-needed climate finance in Pakistan. To facilitate the growth of carbon markets in Pakistan, there is a need for general training and targeted technical support relating to carbon project development.

Within this context, the two-part VCM Pilot Accelerator Program – sponsored by USAID and designed and implemented by Climate Focus – offers training and technical support to Pakistan-based entrepreneurs, companies, and initiatives interested in entering or already involved in carbon project development.
