Feeding the world in a changing climate

New analysis by Climate Focus for Family Farmers for Climate Action (FFCA) reveals that USD 443 billion a year in climate finance is needed to help small-scale family farmers adapt to climate change impacts. This is less than the USD 470 billion a year that is spent on agricultural subsidies which are harmful to people and planet, and is equivalent to an annual average investment of USD 953 for a 1 hectare farm.

Smallholder farms produce half of the world’s food calories and support over 2.5 billion livelihoods across the globe. With adaptation high on the COP30 agenda, and current finance flows to smallholders amounting to just 0.36% of what is needed, FFCA – a farmer-led campaign representing 95 million small-scale producers in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific – is calling for a major boost in adaptation finance and the establishment of a ‘Farmers Fund’ to ensure money gets to where it will have the most impact.
