Food systems account for one-third of global emissions and 15% of fossil fuel use globally each year. At the same time, the scale of climate finance going towards mitigation and adaptation in food systems does not align with the 1.5˚C Paris Agreement targets.
With the Global Alliance for the Future of Food, Climate Focus developed an updated report on the state of climate finance for food systems. The new report — “Public Climate Finance for Food Systems Transformation” — shows how food system transformation is vital to tackle the climate crisis and yet funding for food systems is not keeping pace with the overall increase in climate finance.
Even as overall public climate finance increased between 2017 and 2022, the portion going towards food systems has fallen from 3% to 2.5% during this time. Furthermore, public climate finance towards sustainable food systems is even smaller at just 1.5%.
This report calls for the urgent scaling up of public climate funding to support frontline communities, to phase out fossil fuels, and to invest in climate solutions that promote biodiversity, protect livelihoods, and uphold food sovereignty.
