The 2017 NYDF Progress Assessment is the third in a series of annual reports on progress toward the goals of the New York Declaration on Forests (NYDF). Coordinated by Climate Focus, the assessment is conducted by the NYDF Assessment Partners (formerly NYDF Assessment Coalition), a network of civil society and research groups mandated with tracking progress toward the ten goals of the NYDF until 2020. The NYDF Progress Assessment consists of (1) an in-depth report looking at progress on a selected goal (or set of goals) and (2) brief updates on all the goals.
This year’s assessment focused on Goals 8 and 9 – the finance goals. Goal 8 calls for supporting the development and implementation of strategies to reduce forest emissions, and Goal 9 encourages rewarding countries and jurisdictions that, by taking action, reduce forest emissions. It draws on, consolidates, and interprets data from various initiatives by leading think tanks and research organizations engaged in tracking finance related to forests, reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation, and the sectors driving deforestation such as the OECD-DAC database, FAOSTAT, Climatefundsupdate.org, and Forest Trends’ REDDX Initiative.
NYDF Assessment Partners include: CDP, Chatham House, Climate Focus, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Forest Trends, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves (GACC), Global Canopy Programme (GCP), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Rainforest Alliance, Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF-US). The 2017 NYDF Goals 8 and 9 Report was also advised by the Overseas Development Institute.
