KfW commissioned Climate Focus to analyze the synergies between reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+) and carbon projects. REDD+ accounts for emissions reductions from a specific location from within a forest while carbon projects aim to address the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation. Examples of the latter are energy efficiency or fuel switch projects but the study lists more project types that achieve REDD+ outcomes.
The study lists the carbon projects that are most effective in achieving REDD+ outcomes. The project types have been ranked according to their financial feasibility, robustness of reporting on REDD+ outcomes, technical feasibility and mitigation potential.
