Description
Over the next three decades, an effective and efficient transition to low-carbon economies is required to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To limit warming to 1.5°C or 2°C by 2100, it will be necessary to both half greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions each decade and to ramp up efforts to actively remove carbon from the atmosphere.
Nature-based solutions (NbS) – actions that protect and enhance carbon stored in natural ecosystems and reduce GHG emissions – are essential climate strategies, yet only receive a fraction of global finance.
This webinar will focus on the findings from ‘Unlocking nature-based solutions through carbon markets: Global analysis of available supply potential’. A report which takes a quantitative evaluation of the potential of nature-based solutions (NbS) addressing important knowledge gaps—including critical implementation barriers—and examines the role that carbon markets may play in unlocking NbS mitigation potential in the short-term, mid-term, globally, and at the country-level. The presentation of findings will be followed by an in-depth discussion of opportunities and gaps of accessing carbon markets in general and, specifically the voluntary carbon market (VCM), to unlock the mitigation potential of NbS.
