Climate Focus support EAC negotiators in their COP 22 preparation

Climate Focus, together with their partner Carbon Africa, held a pre-COP22 negotiation support meeting to support East African negotiators in their preparation and collaboration towards Marrakesh. It took place on 17- 18 October 2016 in Entebbe, Uganda and was organized by GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature, Buildings and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) in collaboration with the East African Community Secretariat (EAC), UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC) Kampala and East African Development Bank (EADB).

The two-day workshop was part of a support project to the EAC and Ethiopia aimed at building negotiation capacities and harmonizing climate change interventions in the region. By doing so, states from the East African region will be able to collaboratively engage in developing a common approach that can be shared within the African group. In addition, the program seeks to promote the use of market mechanisms and assist EAC countries in exploring options to include provisions in the climate negotiations.

Climate Focus expert Sandra Greiner was able to provide her experience as an active member of the UNFCCC market negotiations and draw from the longstanding support to African DNAs and African Group of Negotiators in the reform negotiations of the CDM and inclusion of market mechanisms under the new agreement.
