The Position

Climate Focus is implementing an investment accelerator program that identifies and scales climate smart businesses at the nexus of agriculture and renewable energy in East Africa. Specifically, the accelerator offers technical and financial expertise to enterprises that have both (a) the potential to increase productivity, reduce emissions, and enhance adaptation to climate change, through their own operations, their products, or services, and (b) a need for attracting private capital to scale their business. The accelerator program provides tailored support to develop investment-ready businesses and matches them with suitable investors to increase private capital deployment in climate smart agriculture and renewable energy.

Climate Focus is seeking to strengthen its team by hiring a climate smart agribusiness developer who will lead components of the existing accelerator work in Kenya and develop new funding to ensure continuity and longevity of the accelerator program in the broader East African region. The consultant will be based in Nairobi and will focus on identifying and developing investment opportunities that lie at the nexus of climate smart agriculture and renewable energy generation. This position presents an excellent opportunity to work with a pioneering, versatile and dynamic organization, committed to accelerating the deployment of private capital into tailored solutions that generate positive climate- and sustainable development impacts. The position is funded through July 2018 with potential for extension subject to successful performance.

The candidate will be an established and strong team player with proven experience in developing successful businesses in the agriculture, renewable energy, or preferably both sectors in East Africa. The consultant will work in close collaboration with Climate Focus staff to: 

  • Identify and establish relationships with early and growth stage businesses in agricultural value chains in East Africa holding outsized potential from both an investment and climate smart (i.e. mitigation, adaptation, and productivity potential) perspective;

  • Assess investment potential of identified businesses, including the identification of deficiencies in business models and corresponding development priorities;

  • Provide targeted development support to prioritized businesses with a view of turning them into investment opportunities for domestic and international investors;

  • Identify and establish relationships with domestic and international investors specialized in renewable energy and agricultural value chains;

  • Manage local experts recruited to provide targeted technical support to selected businesses;

  • Effectively manage relationships with businesses, investors, government, NGOs and other clients of Climate Focus as applicable;

  • Compensation will be competitive and based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. 


  • At least 10 years’ experience in agribusiness and/or renewable energy development with hands-on experience developing early stage businesses and raising capital;

  • BSc, BA in economics, finance, forestry, agriculture or similar, MBA, MSc. or equivalent foreign degree preferred;

  • Self-motivated individual able to work independently, at own initiative, and under minimal supervision

  • The candidate must be a strong team player that enjoys working in an international field of business and

    communicates efficiently internally as well as with clients and partners

  • Deep understanding of the East African agricultural and energy sectors;

  • Strong analytical capacities and interest in quantitative analysis;

  • Existing networks within private sector and international organizations;

  • Excellent writing and communication skills;

  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili (spoken and written), other languages an asset;

  • Excellent organizational skills, with experience of managing complex projects and workload as well as managing work with project partners;

  • Ability to work well within teams across disciplines and cultures.
